Your Most Frequently Asked Questions About Seniors Living and Seniors Care, Answered

At a glance

Who it’s for: Seniors and families beginning to explore senior living communities and wanting clear answers before booking a tour

What it covers: The questions we hear most, answered plainly; care types, costs, meals, pets, and what “accreditation” actually means

Why it matters: The more informed you feel going in, the more confident the decisions ahead become

Researching senior living communities means wading through a lot of unfamiliar territory. Care levels, funding models, and accreditation statuses can add up quickly. Most families are figuring it all out while also helping a loved one navigate a significant life transition.

At Park Place Seniors Living, a Canadian-owned and operated organization with more than 40 communities across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, we regularly hear many of the same questions from seniors and their families. Below, we provide clear and straightforward answers to some of the most common ones.

What kind of seniors residence is right for us?

This is usually where the conversation starts, and the answer depends on where your loved one is right now, not just where they might be in a few years.

Park Place offers three main levels of care. Independent living is for seniors who are largely self-sufficient but ready for the convenience and connection of community life. There are no nursing services, but residents have chef-prepared meals, housekeeping, activities, and neighbours who are in a similar stage of life. Just as importantly, residents maintain control over how they spend their days. Independent living is designed to support freedom, and personal choice.

Assisted living (BC) and supportive living (AB) sit in the middle. These communities are for seniors who can still make their own decisions but benefit from help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or managing medications.

Long-term care is for seniors who require 24-hour nursing support due to more complex physical or cognitive needs.

Not sure where your loved one fits? Our care comparison chart and short care options survey on our website can help point you in the right direction.

What is the difference between “subsidized” and “private pay”?

Subsidized care means the government covers a portion of the cost, with the resident paying the remainder based on income. Private pay means the resident covers the full cost themselves.

Independent living at Park Place is fully private pay. Assisted and supportive living, as well as long-term care, can be either, depending on your province and individual situation. Our subsidized care page has more details on how to apply and what to expect in each province.

What does it mean when a residence is “accredited”?

Accreditation Canada is an independent, national body that evaluates health care organizations against standardized quality benchmarks. When a long-term care or assisted living residence holds accreditation, it has been assessed externally and found to be following best practices in care delivery.

All Park Place long-term care and assisted living homes are fully accredited. When families are comparing options, it is one concrete thing they can look for.

What is “A Voice and a Choice”?

It is one of the founding principles of Park Place, and it shows up in practical ways every day.

“A Voice and a Choice” is our commitment that residents will be cared for as individuals. It means you keep the right to have input in your care, your routines, and your daily preferences, rather than simply fitting into a set system. When Al and Jenny Jina opened the first Park Place location in Nelson, BC, in 1993, this was built in from the start. It still shapes how care is delivered across every community today.

Are meals and social activities included?

Most Park Place residences include a meal plan as part of the monthly rate across all care levels. Meals are prepared on-site and vary by location — we recommend checking with the specific community you are exploring for the most accurate picture.

Social calendars are also standard. From fitness classes and outings to seasonal events and quieter programming, most locations offer a full schedule each month. Monthly activity calendars can be downloaded directly from each location’s page on our website.

Are small pets allowed?

Yes, at most independent living residences. Visiting pets are also welcome at other care locations, provided they are leashed and have up-to-date vaccinations. Policies can vary, so it is worth confirming directly with the location you have in mind.

What if my loved one’s needs change after moving in?

This comes up in almost every family conversation, and it is worth taking a moment to address.

Many Park Place communities offer more than one level of care, or are near sister locations that do. As needs change over time, there are often options to bring in additional support without requiring a full move to a new facility. Every situation is different, and our teams are used to helping families think through what that pathway might look like.

Still have questions?

The process of choosing a senior living community rarely follows a straight line. Families often come back with new questions after a first tour, after a health change, or after sitting with the information for a while. That is all part of it.

If you want to learn more about a specific community, the easiest first step is often a tour or a conversation with the team on-site. You can find your nearest Park Place location on our Find a Location page. We are happy to start wherever you are in the process.

Food can have such a unique power of bringing people together. It can evoke emotions, help make memories, and be the center of many great connections.

Whether it is sharing a favourite treat, gathering around a table, or enjoying a cup of tea with a new neighbour, these everyday moments can help people feel comfortable, connected, and at home.

For seniors, maintaining meaningful social connections and a sense of independence are important parts of overall well-being. Across Park Place Seniors Living communities, there are a variety of initiatives centred around the collective joy of a tasty bite to eat, helping residents build relationships, create new routines, and continue enjoying the choices and traditions that matter most to them.

From a nostalgic sweet that helps spark memories in residents, to welcoming gatherings which help new residents feel at home, these moments demonstrate how something as simple as food can help strengthen the bond and connection within a community in so many meaningful ways.

Supporting Independence Through Choice at Oyster Harbour

One of the most important aspects of healthy aging is maintaining a sense of independence.

While independence can look different for every person, having the ability to make choices throughout the day remains meaningful. Choosing a favourite snack, deciding what to purchase, or selecting something that brings comfort and joy can help residents maintain a sense of autonomy and control.

At Oyster Harbour, a simple initiative has transformed a familiar experience into an opportunity for connection and independence.

The Weekly Tuck Cart travels through the residence, bringing favourite treats and small treasures directly to residents. More than a convenient shopping opportunity, the cart gives residents the chance to browse, make choices, and enjoy a familiar activity that many have participated in throughout their lives.

The experience has become a highlight of the week for many residents, creating excitement, encouraging conversation, and bringing people together around shared memories and favourite treats.

Strive Story: Sweet Choices

Weekly Tuck Cart Empowers Resident Independence

Oyster Harbour has introduced the Weekly Tuck Cart—a mobile shop filled with treats, snacks, and small treasures—to help residents live with joy, dignity, and independence. Each week, the cart travels through the halls, allowing residents to browse and purchase items that bring comfort and delight, such as favorite candies and nostalgic snacks. More than just a source of sweets, the Tuck Cart fosters autonomy by giving residents the freedom to make their own choices, reminiscent of shopping trips from years past. The initiative has become a social event, sparking conversations, laughter, and excitement among residents. Operated by the Activity Department, the Tuck Cart has been warmly embraced by both families and residents, promoting independence, choice, and a vibrant community atmosphere.

OYSTER HARBOUR

Creating Connections Through a Warm Welcome at Laurel Place

Moving into a seniors community is an exciting transition, but it can also come with a lot of new information, unfamiliar faces, and questions.

Many new residents and families are focused on learning about their new home, meeting staff, and understanding daily routines. While orientation materials and information sessions are important, meaningful connections are often built through informal conversations and shared experiences.

At Laurel Place, a simple gathering centred around tea and conversation has helped create those opportunities.

The Quarterly Welcome Tea provides a relaxed environment where new residents and their families can meet members of the management team, connect with Resident Ambassadors, and get to know others in the community. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by information during the move in process, newcomers have an opportunity to ask questions, build relationships, and settle in at their own pace.

The result is a more welcoming experience that helps residents and families feel supported from the very beginning.

Strive Story: Quarterly Welcome Tea

Enhancing Resident and Family Engagement

The quarterly Welcome Tea was introduced in response to feedback that the move-in process for new residents and families felt rushed and overwhelming. This event provides a relaxed setting where newcomers can receive important information about the home, meet the management team, and connect with Resident Ambassadors. The initiative has received highly positive feedback, enhancing resident and family engagement by making the transition smoother and fostering a welcoming, supportive community.

LAUREL PLACE

The Lasting Impact of Small Moments

When people think about seniors living, they often think about services, care, and amenities. While those things are important, community is often built through everyday experiences.

A favourite candy purchased from a tuck cart. A conversation over tea with a new neighbour. A chance to make a personal choice. A welcoming environment where families feel comfortable asking questions.

These moments help residents maintain their individuality while building meaningful connections with the people around them.

Across Park Place Seniors Living communities, initiatives like the Weekly Tuck Cart and the Quarterly Welcome Tea demonstrate how food and hospitality can support independence, encourage social connection, and help residents feel at home.

Because sometimes the most meaningful parts of community life begin with something as simple as a sweet treat or a shared cup of tea.

Elevating Seniors’ Quality of Life With Communication & Innovation

At a Glance

Who it’s for: Seniors and their families who want to understand how independent living condos in BC and Alberta support their residents’ health and quality of life.

What it covers: Stories of how we use communication and technology to improve how we work with our residents and their families.

Why it matters: These streamlined workflows and our shared STRIVE values support our happy, thriving residents.

Solving Challenges in Seniors’ Living

For many, retirement is supposed to be the best time of their lives. But some seniors and their families face challenges, especially when moving to an independent living community. We’re seeking to change that through better communication and technology.

Whether it’s addressing communication gaps in care or the stress of moving, our staff works closely with seniors and their families to solve these challenges together.

Beating the Winter Blues with Laughter

As the colder winter sets in, many seniors in our communities spend more time indoors. To add some brightness to their daily lives, the staff at Sun Village in Penticton, BC, created the “Ha Ha” Window of Joy in the lobby. Staff regularly hang jokes and comics in this space, and residents look forward to walking by to see what’s new and have a little laugh.

It may seem like a simple initiative, but it brings year-round joy and laughter to the community, creating a more cheerful atmosphere and strengthening connections between residents and staff.

Solving Clinical Communication Challenges

With shift change, frontline staff rotate throughout the day. In some care homes, this could pose a challenge to continuity of patient care, but not at Park Place communities.

At Silverado Creek in Calgary, the staff implemented rotating rounds between day and evening shifts to ensure frontline staff are always up to date on resident status, care plan changes, and relevant clinical updates.

Not only has this approach to communication improved care planning and shared decision-making among staff, but families also benefit from greater confidence in care delivery through consistent, informed communication.

Eliminating “Paper”-Work to Improve Patient Care

In the past, the need to record patient notes and information on paper caused delays due to limited computer availability or the need for manual paperwork. Care providers were spending more time on paperwork than being present for the residents.

To solve this challenge, the team at Maeford Place in Quesnel, BC, introduced tablets into their care plans. This now allows the team to update care needs immediately after the care was provided, elevating the accuracy and currency of care for every resident.

Easing the Transition

The team at Laurel Place in Surrey, BC, noticed that many new residents felt rushed and stressed during their transition into their suites. To make them feel more welcomed, the team hosted a Quarterly Welcome Tea where new residents could meet with management and resident ambassadors in a relaxed setting.

Since hosting these events, the team has received overwhelmingly positive feedback. New residents enjoy how it makes the transition smoother and fosters a welcoming, supportive community.

Communication Makes All The Difference

Transitioning into an independent living community or extended care home can be a big change. Our caring, holistic approach to this transition helps us do everything we can to ensure you live an enriching life by continually improving our services and care.

These stories are only the beginning. Across our Park Place Seniors Living communities, we STRIVE to create a welcoming environment through:

Safety & Quality

At a glance

Who it’s for: Seniors and families exploring seniors living options at one of our independent living communities

What it covers: How Park Place builds relationships between staff, residents, and teams across Canada

Why it matters: Strong relationships create a more supportive, connected, and comfortable place to live

Strong relationships are built through everyday interactions, shared spaces, open communication, and a culture that values connection between residents and staff.

When seniors and families explore senior living options, they often look at services, amenities, and location. Just as important, though, is how a community feels, and that often comes down to relationships and staff career satisfaction.

At Park Place Seniors Living, a Canadian-owned seniors living organization, relationship-building is part of daily life. Across independent living communities, the focus is on creating environments where residents and staff feel connected, supported, and comfortable with one another.

Why do relationships matter in seniors’ living?

Relationships in seniors living communities are shaped not only by interactions, but by how supported staff feel in their roles.

When staff have the space to rest, connect, and feel valued in their work, it allows them to show up more fully for residents. Initiatives like comfortable staff spaces, team-led events, and open communication all contribute to a stronger, more connected workplace.

This carries into daily life in the community. Residents experience more consistent care, clearer communication, and a more positive environment when teams are supported behind the scenes.

When staff feel supported, they are better able to support others.

How does The Wellington create space for connection?

At The Wellington in Alberta, relationship-building starts with giving staff the space to rest and connect.

Through the Alberta Care for Staff Grant, the staff room was redesigned into a more comfortable and welcoming environment. With calming music, better communication tools, and a relaxed atmosphere, the space allows staff to recharge and spend time together.

These moments of connection between staff members help strengthen teamwork, which carries into their interactions with residents. When staff feel supported and connected, it often shows in how they engage with the people around them.

How does River Ridge strengthen team and community relationships?

At River Ridge, relationships are built through shared experiences.

The Work/Life Committee organizes staff appreciation days, social events, and wellness activities throughout the year. These gatherings give team members a chance to connect outside of their daily responsibilities and build stronger relationships over time.

That sense of connection extends into the broader community. Residents and families often notice when staff work well together, as it creates a more positive and consistent environment.

How does Greystone Manor Retirement Residence support connections for both staff and residents?

At Greystone Manor, relationship-building is supported through both environment and communication.

The updated staff room provides a more comfortable place for team members to take breaks and connect. At the same time, resident committees and guest speakers create opportunities for residents to share their perspectives and stay involved in community life.

These efforts help create open lines of communication, where both staff and residents feel heard and supported.

How do these efforts reflect our “STRIVE values”?

These approaches to relationship-building reflect our STRIVE values in practical ways. At Park Place, we strive for excellence and to create environments where residents feel safe, heard, and supported. These aren’t just ideals. Each value shapes how we show up for the residents and families in our community every day.

Safety & Quality supports a stable and comfortable environment by providing safe spaces where care is effective and person-centred, with a focus on quality.

Teamwork & Partnerships strengthen connections across teams and communities by supporting each other to create a connected culture that brings out our best.

Responsibility & Stewardship guides thoughtful improvements by doing our best work and ensuring we are good stewards to ensure a sustainable future.

Innovation & Creativity encourages new ways to bring people together by creating open conversations that encourage innovation around enriching lives.

Voices that are Respected ensures residents and staff are heard, respected, and having their needs, values, and preferences responded to.

Empathy & Trust builds meaningful, everyday connections by fostering trusting relationships, welcoming diversity, and seeking understanding.

These values are not separate from daily life; they are part of how relationships are built and maintained at Park Place Seniors Living.

What does this mean for residents and families?

When staff feel supported in their work, it has a direct impact on the experience of residents.

A team that has time to rest, connect, and feel valued is often more present, consistent, and engaged in their roles. For residents, this can show up in small but meaningful ways: familiar routines, thoughtful interactions, and a sense of stability day to day.

For families, it offers reassurance. Seeing a team that works well together and feels supported can help build confidence that their loved one is in a steady and well-run environment.

See how these connections take shape

Choosing a seniors community is often about more than services; it’s about how the environment is supported behind the scenes.

At Park Place Seniors Living, initiatives like those at The Wellington, River Ridge, and Greystone Manor show how supporting staff well-being and connection can shape the overall experience of a community. When teams are given the tools and space to do their work well, it carries through to residents in a practical, everyday way.

If you’re researching different senior living options, paying attention to how staff interact and how supported they seem can offer a clearer picture of what daily life may feel like.

At a glance

Who it’s for: Seniors and families learning more about Park Place Seniors Living

What it covers: A breakdown of the STRIVE values and how they show up in daily life

Why it matters: Understanding these values helps explain how communities are run and what residents can expect

STRIVE is the set of guiding values at Park Place Seniors Living, shaping how care, connection, and daily life are approached across every community.

When exploring seniors living options, it’s natural to look at services, amenities, and location. But just as important and often less visible are the values that guide how a community operates day to day.

At Park Place Seniors Living, a Canadian-owned seniors living organization, those values are captured in one word: STRIVE.

STRIVE reflects how teams approach senior care across Canada. It’s not a slogan or a one-time initiative it’s a framework that guides decisions, interactions, and the overall experience for residents, families, and staff.

What does STRIVE stand for?

STRIVE is an acronym that represents six key commitments:

Safety & Quality

Teamwork & Partnerships

Responsibility & Stewardship

Innovation & Creativity

Voices that are Respected

Empathy & Trust

Each one plays a role in shaping how Park Place senior communities operate and how residents experience daily life.

S — Safety & Quality

Safety and quality are the foundation of everything.

This includes maintaining clean, well-run environments, following consistent care practices, and ensuring that residents feel secure in their surroundings. It also means paying attention to the details that support day-to-day comfort and well-being.

Safety is not just about procedures; it’s about creating an environment where seniors in our communities feel at ease.

T — Teamwork & Partnerships

Strong communities are built through collaboration.

At Park Place, teamwork extends across staff, residents, families, and community partners. Whether it’s working with local organizations or supporting one another within the team, this approach helps create a more connected and responsive environment.

Partnerships also bring additional knowledge and resources into the community, supporting residents in practical ways.

R — Responsibility & Stewardship

Responsibility means being accountable for both people and resources.

As a Canadian-owned organization, Park Place focuses on long-term sustainability and thoughtful decision-making. Stewardship reflects a commitment to using resources carefully while maintaining a high standard of living for residents.

It’s about doing what’s right: consistently and responsibly.

I — Innovation & Creativity

Innovation doesn’t always mean big changes. Often, it shows up in small, thoughtful improvements.

This can include new programming, updated approaches to daily routines, or creative ways to support resident engagement. The goal is to stay responsive to changing needs while continuing to improve the experience of living in a seniors community.

V — Voices that are Respected

Listening is a key part of building trust.

At Park Place communities, residents are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and be part of conversations that affect their daily lives. Feedback is taken seriously and helps shape how communities evolve over time.

When people feel heard, they feel more comfortable and more connected.

Being listened to is one of the simplest ways to feel at home.

E — Empathy & Trust

Empathy is about understanding each person’s experience.

Trust is built through consistency, communication, and care. Together, these values help create an environment where residents feel supported not just physically, but emotionally as well.

It’s often these quieter, day-to-day interactions that have the biggest impact.

How do these values show up in everyday life?

STRIVE is not something separate from daily operations; it’s part of how communities function.

It can be seen in how staff interact with residents, how concerns are addressed, and how programs are designed. It shapes both the visible and less visible parts of community life.

For seniors and families exploring senior living, understanding these values can provide insight into what living in a Park Place community may feel like over time.

See How STRIVE Comes to Life in Our Communities

Choosing a seniors community is about more than services; it’s about how people are treated and supported each day.

At Park Place Seniors Living, STRIVE reflects a commitment to doing that well. Across communities in Canada, these values guide how care is delivered, how relationships are built, and how residents experience daily life.

If you’re learning more about seniors living, taking the time to understand a community’s values can be just as important as seeing the space itself.

At a Glance

Who it’s for: Seniors and families exploring seniors living options and wanting to understand what daily life can look like in a Park Place community.

What it covers: How recreation programs, shared activities, and community initiatives help residents stay active, connected, and involved in everyday life.

Why it matters: Opportunities to participate, connect with others, and enjoy familiar activities can make a meaningful difference in how residents experience community living.

Everyday Life in a Park Place Community

Many seniors and families want to understand what everyday life in a seniors community actually feels like. Beyond the practical details, people are often curious about the opportunities residents have to stay active, connect with others, and spend their time in ways that feel enjoyable and familiar.

At Park Place Seniors Living communities, daily life includes many opportunities for residents to take part in activities, connect with neighbours, and enjoy time together. Whether it’s joining a favourite group activity, attending live entertainment, or simply spending time with friends, these moments help create a welcoming and lively environment.

Across Park Place communities, recreation programs and shared initiatives are an important part of that experience. Many of these ideas are highlighted in STRIVE stories, which share examples of how different residences bring Park Place’s core values to life in everyday ways.

Recreation Programs That Bring Residents Together

At Shaughnessy Seniors Community, the recreation department introduced a refreshed approach to activities, expanding the number and variety of programs available to residents.

The community now offers a wide range of activities throughout the week, including baking programs, pet therapy visits, church services, Bingo, breakfast and lunch clubs, happy hours, ice cream socials, high tea gatherings, live entertainment, garden walks, and bus outings around the local area.

As the STRIVE story explains:

“The recreation department underwent a major transformation, introducing a vibrant calendar of activities such as baking, pet therapy, church services, Bingo, breakfast and lunch clubs, happy hours, ice cream socials, high tea, live entertainment, garden walks, bus outings, and specialized dementia programming.”

Community connections were also expanded by welcoming local students to visit the residence for performances and sing-along events. These visits create enjoyable experiences for residents while strengthening relationships between the residence and the surrounding community.

Programs like these help residents stay active, maintain social connections, and enjoy time together with neighbours who share similar interests.

Creative Projects That Encourage Connection

At Piccadilly Seniors Community, a creative project known as the Ladybug Connection Garden brought residents, families, and team members together around a shared activity.

Participants worked together to paint small ladybug rocks by hand. Once completed, the colourful rocks were placed around a tree in the courtyard, gradually creating a bright and cheerful garden space that everyone in the community can visit and enjoy.

The STRIVE story describes the project this way:

“The Ladybug Connection Garden is a heartwarming initiative designed to foster meaningful connections and a vibrant community among residents, families, and staff.”

Projects like this offer a simple way for people to spend time together while expressing creativity. They also give families an opportunity to take part in activities with their loved ones when visiting the community.

As more ladybugs were added to the garden, the courtyard became a small but meaningful gathering place. Now residents and families can pause, share stories, and enjoy time outdoors together.

Why Activities Matter in Seniors Living

Opportunities to participate in activities can make a meaningful difference in how residents experience life in a seniors community.

Across Park Place communities, residents at a variety of care levels, including independent living, assisted living, and long-term care in BC and Ontario, and Type A and Type B supportive living in Alberta, have opportunities to take part in programs and events designed to help them stay connected and involved.

Group activities help residents meet neighbours and form friendships. Familiar pastimes such as music, games, social gatherings, or creative projects often provide a comfortable way for residents to spend time together.

Activities can also create opportunities for families to participate during visits, whether that means attending an event, joining a celebration, or simply enjoying a shared moment together.

Meaningful activities help turn a residence into a community.

A Shared Approach Across Park Place Communities

Each Park Place community develops activities and programs that reflect the interests and preferences of its residents. While every residence is unique, the goal remains the same: creating an environment where residents have opportunities to stay involved, connect with others, and enjoy their day.

Stories like those from Shaughnessy and Piccadilly are just two examples of how Park Place communities encourage creativity, participation, and connection.

Across the Park Place family, these initiatives help create welcoming environments where residents can continue enjoying the things that make life meaningful.

Life at Park Place

At Park Place Seniors Living communities, everyday life includes opportunities for residents to stay active, share experiences with neighbours, and enjoy the comfort of being part of a welcoming community.

Keeping You Informed: Resources Designed for Families

When a loved one moves into seniors living or long-term care, families often find themselves learning new terminology, new routines, and new processes all at once.

Even when care feels steady and supportive, questions naturally arise. What does this medical term mean? How are safety measures handled? Where can I read more about my loved one’s rights? What should I expect during certain stages of care?

At Park Place Seniors Living, we believe that clear information helps families feel more confident and involved. That’s why we developed our Keeping You Informed brochure series – a resource library created specifically for residents and their families.

These materials are practical, accessible, and easy to revisit whenever questions come up.

Why We Created the Keeping You Informed Series

Care environments are dynamic and families deserve clarity along the way. The Keeping You Informed brochures were developed to provide straightforward explanations of common topics families ask about. They are reviewed by the Park Place Family Focus Group to ensure they reflect real questions and are written in language that feels clear and approachable.

The purpose is simple: make important information easier to understand and easier to access.

Physical copies are available in the lobby of all Park Place Assisted Living/Type B and Long Term Care/Type A residences. Families can also explore the full collection online through our website. Whether you prefer to read one during a visit or review it at home, the information is there when you need it.

What Topics Do the Brochures Cover?

The Keeping You Informed series addresses a wide range of subjects, organized around the areas families most frequently want clarity on.

Everyday Health and Safety

Some brochures focus on day-to-day wellbeing and safety, with topics such as infection prevention, fall management, medication safety, hydration, and general health practices. These resources explain how safety measures work and why they matter.

Understanding Clinical Care

Other materials help families better understand aspects of clinical care and care planning. They clarify commonly used healthcare terminology, outline how assessments are conducted, and explain how teams coordinate around changing needs.

Resident Rights and Advocacy

Transparency also includes making sure residents and families understand their rights. The resource library includes information about the Resident Bill of Rights, resident and family councils, disclosure practices, and policies designed to support dignity and inclusion.

Emotional and End-of-Life Support

Some brochures address sensitive and important moments in care. These resources provide guidance around grief, changes in appetite, pain management, and preparing for the end of life. They offer thoughtful explanations that families can return to during difficult times.

Together, these themes reflect the full experience of seniors living. Practical, clinical, emotional, and relational.

If you would like to explore specific topics in more detail, the complete series is available through the Keeping You Informed section of the Park Place Seniors Living website.

How Families Use These Resources

Families use these brochures in different ways.

Some read them before a scheduled care conference to better understand terminology. Others review them after a health update to clarify what was discussed. Some access them during seasonal illness periods for reassurance about prevention measures.

Because the materials are always available in residence lobbies and online, families can return to them at their own pace. Information does not need to be absorbed all at once, and can be revisited when it feels relevant.

That accessibility helps reduce uncertainty and supports more confident conversations between families and care teams.

Education Strengthens Partnership

Care is strongest when families and staff feel aligned.

The Keeping You Informed series supports that alignment by creating shared understanding. When families know what to expect and understand the reasoning behind policies and practices, communication becomes smoother and more collaborative.

These brochures reflect Park Place’s broader commitment to transparency and open dialogue. They are one way we ensure that important information is not hidden in policy manuals or limited to formal meetings.

Instead, it is shared openly and designed to be understood.

Explore the Resource Library

Whether you are preparing for a care conference, looking for clarity after a recent update, or simply wanting to better understand how care is delivered, these materials are there to support you.

If you have questions about a specific topic or would like to discuss something further, we encourage you to get in touch with us directly. We are always available to talk through questions, provide context, and ensure you feel supported.

Trust is built through consistency. In seniors living and long-term care, families are placing something deeply important in the hands of others: the well-being of someone they love. Clear, steady communication helps create confidence in that decision. At Park Place Seniors Living, structured touchpoints between staff, leadership, and families are a core part of delivering quality care.

Regular communication supports accountability, alignment, and collaboration. When teams are coordinated and families are informed, care becomes more consistent and responsive.

At a Glance

Who this is for: Families with loved ones in seniors living or long-term care

What this article covers: How structured communication strengthens care and builds trust

Why it matters: Clear, ongoing touchpoints improve coordination, transparency, and confidence

Why Communication Matters in Senior Care

Care environments are dynamic, with resident needs evolving on a regular basis and staff teams rotating across shifts.

Without strong communication systems, information can become fragmented, but when communication is consistent and documented, teams remain aligned, and families feel informed.

At Park Place residences, communication is integrated into daily operations. Documentation processes, leadership oversight, and proactive outreach ensure that updates are shared and questions are addressed. This approach supports both clinical excellence and family confidence.

Two of our STRIVE stories highlight how structured communication strengthens trust across our communities.

STRIVE Story: Northcrest

At Northcrest Seniors Community, leadership responded to concerns by implementing a structured communication model:

Building Trust Through Family Comfort Rounds
Enhancing Communication and Accountability in Resident Care
Family Comfort Rounds were developed to address repeated concerns and complaints from families about resident care. By adapting the existing Comfort Rounds model, which assesses pain, positioning, personal needs, and placement of belongings, the initiative aims to improve communication and transparency between staff, management, and families. The process involves regular, team-shared documentation and proactive discussions with families about their preferred communication methods and frequency. This approach has helped rebuild trust, reduce conflict, and foster collaboration, resulting in positive feedback from families and staff, greater accountability, and a more supportive care environment.
NORTHCREST

This initiative demonstrates how structured, proactive communication can strengthen relationships. By clearly documenting care discussions and inviting families to share their communication preferences, Northcrest facilitated greater transparency and fewer misunderstandings.

The result was improved satisfaction and a more collaborative environment for residents, families, and staff.

STRIVE Story: Silverado Creek

At Silverado Creek Seniors Community, the focus centred on strengthening internal coordination among frontline staff:

Improving Care With Communication
Enhancing Care Quality Through Rotating Weekly Clinical Rounds
Weekly clinical rounds have been implemented on a rotating schedule between day and evening shifts to keep frontline staff (HCAs and nurses) updated on resident status, care plan changes, and relevant clinical updates. This approach increases staff awareness, improves care planning, and promotes shared decision-making. For residents, it ensures care is consistently aligned with their current needs, enhancing safety and quality. Families benefit from greater confidence in care delivery through consistent and informed communication.
SILVERADO CREEK

Rotating clinical rounds ensures that information flows across shifts and disciplines. Frontline staff remain aligned on evolving care needs, and documentation reflects current realities.

For families, this internal alignment translates into confidence. When care teams are informed and coordinated, outward communication becomes clearer and more consistent.

A System-Wide Commitment to Family Touchpoints

Across Park Place Seniors Living’s residences, structured communication is not limited to one initiative or one site. It is part of a broader organizational commitment.

Key elements include:

Documented care planning processes

Regular interdisciplinary discussions

Leadership visibility and oversight

Proactive outreach to families

Clear points of contact within each community

These touchpoints support transparency and accountability. They also reinforce a culture where questions are welcomed and dialogue is ongoing.

With over 40 residences across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, consistency in communication practices is essential. Families deserve clarity regardless of location.

What This Means for Families

Families can expect regular updates, open channels for questions, and documented care planning that reflects current needs.

We also accommodate different communication preferences. Some families prefer scheduled check-ins, while others appreciate updates when there are changes to care plans. By discussing these preferences early and revisiting them over time, teams can align communication with family expectations.

Trust grows when information is shared clearly and consistently, when families feel heard, and when accountability is visible.

Continuing the Conversation

Quality care depends on collaboration, and collaboration depends on communication.

At Park Place Seniors Living, structured family touchpoints are part of daily practice across our communities. From Family Comfort Rounds to rotating clinical updates, these systems support transparency, coordination, and confidence.

If you are exploring seniors living or long-term care options with Park Place Seniors Living, we welcome you to connect with our team and learn more about how our proactive approach to communication supports the care our residents deserve in all of our residences.

From twinkling lights to shared meals and cozy gatherings, the coming weeks are full of small moments that bring people together. At Park Place, the holidays are a reflection of who we are: a community built on connection, care, and kindness.

Creating a Festive Atmosphere

The joy of the season begins with the sights, sounds, and scents that fill our communities. Teams will soon be busy transforming spaces with sparkling lights, wreaths, and festive touches that make every hallway feel warm and welcoming.

Residents will join in the fun too, helping decorate trees, hang ornaments, or create handmade crafts that add a personal touch to each community’s holiday decor. The aroma of fresh baking drifts through dining rooms and coffee bistros, while cheerful music and laughter remind us that the holidays are truly about being together.

Gathering Around the Table

Few things capture the heart of the holidays like a shared meal. Across Park Place communities, residents and families look forward to special seasonal dinners, thoughtfully prepared by our talented culinary teams.

Each meal is crafted with care, featuring comforting classics and festive favourites that bring back fond memories, from roast turkey and cranberry sauce to warm pies and decadent desserts. Families are invited to join, filling dining rooms with conversation and laughter. These moments around the table are all about connection, gratitude, and the joy of belonging.

Celebrating Traditions, New and Old

Every community adds its own special touches to the season. Some host concerts, themed parties, or holiday movie nights; others plan craft workshops, card-making afternoons, or visits from local choirs.

Whether it’s residents exchanging gifts, baking cookies together, or simply enjoying the glow of the tree with friends, these shared traditions bring out the best of the season.

Behind the scenes, our staff make the magic happen. Recreation teams, care aides, and hospitality staff go above and beyond each year to make every celebration feel special. Their creativity and compassion ensure that every resident can take part in the joy of the holidays, no matter their abilities or traditions.

Staying Connected with Loved Ones

The holidays are also a time for family, and even when the weather makes travel difficult, Park Place communities make it easy to stay connected. Residents can gather with loved ones in cozy lounges or private dining rooms, or connect virtually through video calls and shared photos.

Families appreciate knowing that their loved ones are surrounded by care and companionship, especially during this busy time of year. Inside every Park Place community, there’s always someone to share a story, a cup of cocoa, or a smile.

Reflecting on What Matters Most

As the year draws to a close, it’s natural to pause and reflect on what we’re most thankful for. The friendships we’ve formed, the memories we’ve made, and the sense of belonging that defines life at Park Place.

Built on a foundation of trust, integrity, and personalized care, Park Place has always been a family. Small Acts, Big Impact: The Power of Kindness in Our Communities

Kindness has a way of making even ordinary days feel extraordinary. It can be as simple as a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand, small gestures that brighten someone’s day and strengthen the bonds between us.

At Park Place Seniors Living, kindness is a big part of who we are. Across every residence, you’ll find countless examples of compassion in action: a resident comforting a friend, a team member going above and beyond, or families expressing gratitude to the staff who care for their loved ones. Together, these small acts of care create something powerful: a community built on connection, respect, and heart.

The Power of Everyday Kindness

Research shows that kindness has measurable benefits for both the giver and the receiver. Acts of kindness can reduce stress, lift mood, and even improve physical well-being by lowering blood pressure and promoting a sense of belonging.

For older adults in particular, kindness and connection play an important role in well-being. According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, acts of kindness are linked to better physical health and longer life. In other words, small gestures truly add up to better days and healthier lives.

In a senior community, kindness takes many forms. It might be a resident offering to help a neighbour to lunch, a staff member taking extra time to listen, or a volunteer sharing a story that sparks laughter and memories. Each gesture, no matter how small, reminds us that we’re all connected, and that compassion is what turns a place to live into a place to belong.

Kindness in Action Across Park Place Seniors Living

Every day, our communities are filled with moments of care and connection. Residents support one another, welcoming new neighbours or offering a friendly ear when someone needs company. Families express gratitude through cards, kind words, or simple acts of appreciation. Our dedicated staff, from nurses and care aides to hospitality and recreation teams, continually go above and beyond to make life brighter for those they serve.

It’s these quiet, consistent acts of kindness that truly define Park Place. They build trust, strengthen relationships, and remind us that compassion is contagious. One small act can ripple outward, inspiring others to do the same.

Built on a Foundation of Care

Since day one, Park Place has been built on a foundation of trust, integrity, and personalized care. Those values guide everything we do, from the way our staff interact with residents to the way our communities support one another.

Each Park Place residence is only made possible by our incredible team members. Our commitment to care has attracted some of the most compassionate and skilled professionals in the industry, many of whom have been with us for years. Their dedication, empathy, and teamwork create a warm and welcoming environment where residents feel valued, supported, and at home.

Together, our teams embody these principles in everything they do. Whether it’s a nurse offering reassurance, a cook preparing a favourite meal, or a recreation team member sharing laughter during an activity, their kindness defines who we are.

The Ripple Effect of Connection

Kindness has a ripple effect. One positive gesture, like a shared laugh, a word of encouragement, or a small act of service, can brighten someone’s day and inspire another act in return. That’s how a culture of care grows stronger, through daily moments of understanding, patience, and appreciation.

At Park Place, we see it happen constantly. A resident’s cheerful greeting lifts the mood of an entire table. A staff member’s thoughtful act of care brings comfort and peace to a family. Over time, these moments form the heartbeat of our communities, steady, compassionate, and full of life.

Choosing Kindness, Every Day

Kindness doesn’t require grand gestures; it’s built one moment at a time. And in every Park Place community, those moments are what make all the difference.

When you walk through the doors of a Park Place residence, you’ll feel it in the smiles, the laughter, and the genuine care shared between residents and staff. It’s what makes our communities feel like home.

We invite you to experience it for yourself. Book a tour today and discover how acts of kindness create moments of joy at Park Place Seniors Living.
