Welcome from the Owners, Al and Jenny Jina
Who we are and how we started… Hello. My name is Al Jina. My wife Jenny and I began Park Place Seniors Living in 1994, when we acquired and ran our first care home in Nelson, BC.
From this experience we learned that to live ‘in Care’, or to place a loved one ‘into Care’, it is essential that people have confidence in those who do the caring. That is why I would like to introduce myself and my wife, Jenny.
I am a lawyer by profession and Jenny is a nurse with a Masters Degree. Jenny was also awarded the Royal Canadian Legion Fellowship in Gerontology by the Canadian Nurses Association. Since 1993 our company has grown and become one of British Columbia’s largest, nationally accredited, providers of seniors care and retirement housing.
Built on integrity, honest practices and dedication to customer care & service, we have built a solid reputation for our company.
Since those early days, the company has managed to attract some of the industry’s best & brightest people. Together, our team strives to create home-like living environments with access to professional care, recreation, social and spiritual activities that enrich the lives of seniors. More recently, we have begun to design and built care homes, nursing home, assisted living, and independent living apartments that better suit the lifestyles of today’s seniors.
One of the proudest moments for Jenny and me came in May 2005, when Park Place became nationally accredited by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation. This recognition is important to us as it allows us to know that, even as we grow, we still provide the very best in care and service at all of our care homes. In 2008, we again earned accreditation with a glowing report and four citations which identified Park Place Seniors Living as an industry leader in four areas.
This is particularly important today because Park Place Seniors Living serves more than 1500 customers in residential care, assisted living and independent retirement communities.

Home is where the heart is …
Jenny and I have never met a resident that wants to come into a Care Home; most come because they can no longer manage safely in their own home. However, most of our residents come to love their new care home and appreciate the care and the opportunity to live well.
At Park Place, we make it our goal to serve our customer’s needs, wants and desires, not just cater to their illness or incapacity. We believe seniors deserve to enjoy life, to have fun and remain vital, even when their health is not 100%. Jenny and I work with our team to ensure we create a safe, secure yet fun place to live, love and laugh.
We have learned from the seniors we have served over the years that "home is where the heart is.”

Designing habitats for PEOPLE…. A house is a building… a home is what is created inside that house. Park Place understands that bricks and mortar don’t make a home; it is the interaction between people that create a sense of ‘home’.
In recent years Jenny and I have had the opportunity to design and build new care homes for our residents and tenants. This has allowed us to make sure that we create smaller communities with home like neighbourhoods where those we serve can live more normalized lives.
Park Place has partnered with BC’s leading architect in the design and building of seniors communities. Scott Gordon Architects are passionate about designing space in which the ‘home’ can be created. Their philosophy and dedication to enriching the lives of seniors mirror our own. We are very excited about the possibilities.

It’s about people… Jenny and I firmly believe that we are not simply in the care and housing business.
We are in the PEOPLE business… people serving people.
In order to do this successfully we have to attract, hire, retain and deserve the best people.
Over the years, as the company grew, we knew we could not do it all ourselves. We had to surround ourselves with other people as dedicated to serving seniors as we are. To do this we had to clearly define what was important to us as owners, for our customers… So we created our company mission statement…

Putting people first… As we grow it is important that we standardize our practices to ensure they meet the stringent requirements set out by the legislation. Equally important is to make sure that the type of service and care provided to each person reflects their needs. Jenny and I are committed to never losing sight of the individual.
In developing a care & service program we take a ‘whole-person’ approach to ensure that we are catering all their needs, wants and desire and not just the ‘broken parts.’ Illness, frailty and lack of cognitive ability may determine a person’s reason for coming to our homes… but beyond these limitations lay a whole world of opportunities to remain vital and active.
In Residential Care we do this by working with the resident and their family to compile a profile of the individual. Together we look at a person’s current medical status, their personal & social history, any religious or spiritual preference, their hobbies and interests, and any other influencing factors. Then we ask the question: “How do you want to live here?” The response is written and called “My Day”. It chronicles the wants, needs and desires of that particular resident and acts as a guide for the staff to follow.
Our tenants, both in assisted living and our retirement residence remain actively involved through a Tenant Council. Here they are able to advocate for everything from food to outings and everything else in between.
All of our facilities have Resident/Tenant Rights posted and followed. Satisfactions surveys are conducted twice a year to provide Jenny and me, with feedback on how well we are doing. We welcome all suggestions and comments. One way we have improved over the years is by responding to our customer’s feedback.
