With the help of a volunteer, a Pine Grove resident practiced her planting skills in April with bunches of daffodils.
She is now ready to apply her expertise to Pine Grove's entry in the 2017 Sunflower Growing competition.

Courtyard Terrace finished strong with three surviving flowers, grown by Michelle, Alida and Leni.

The Hilton Villa team is shown in front of their very TALL flowers. In the western division, they took first for the tallest plant with a 10-foot, 10-inch plant. They came second for biggest face at 12 inches.

Spring Valley's team took second place in the west division with a 10 foot, 2-inch plant.

First place in the biggest diameter was taken by Spring Valley's GIANT flower, which had a diameter of 17 inches.

Tom Green of Mountain Lake produced the largest plant among the gardeners in this Nelson assisted living/complex care home. As shown in the photo at right, several of the plants became dinner for some unknown browsing animal. Nelson was in the eastern division, which was won by Newport Harbour for tallest plant and by Piccadilly for biggest face.

AND THE WINNERS FOR 2016 ARE:

WEST DIVISION: TALLEST PLANT was won by Hilton Villa with a sunflower that reached 10 feet, 10 inches.
Spring Valley was a close second at 10 feet, 2 inches.

WEST DIVISION: BIGGEST FACE (flower diameter) was claimed by Spring Valley with a 17-inch bloom.
Hilton Villa was second with a 12 inch diameter bloom.

EAST DIVISION: TALLEST PLANT was won by Newport Harbour with a sunflower that reached 8 feet, 8 inches.
Second was a 7 foot, 2 inch plant grown at Piccadilly.

EAST DIVISION: BIGGEST FACE (flower diameter) was won by Piccadilly with a 5.5 inch face.

PRIZES: We are having special trophies made for display in the winning homes, with smaller keeper plaques so winning growers will always have a record of their success.
