Villa Marguerite is a friendly and supportive home for more than 200 residents. In 2015 Villa Marguerite joined the Park Place Seniors Living family and found the Park Place Seniors Living mission - 'to enrich the lives of seniors (and the people we serve) through innovation and creativity' matched the goals of the Villa Marguerite team.

Villa Marguerite provides Designated Supportive Living care and services for 134 residents with physical challenges and mental health needs. Villa Marguerite also serves 94 senior residents with dementia who live safely in a secure community.

This historic facility is located amid beautiful grounds in a quiet residential setting on the west side of Edmonton. The location will be further developed into a full campus of care with the 2018 opening of a 99- bed long term care home. The care home is currently under construction.

The Villa Marguerite team strives to create communities where residents are involved in decisions that matter to them and have choices in how they want their day to unfold. There are regular meetings with residents and ongoing opportunities to provide feedback so the team can improve care and services.

ASSISTED AND SUPPORTIVE LIVING AT PARK PLACE

assistedLiving

Two Courtyard Terrace residents enjoy a day trip to the pier; another resident grows a
prize-winning sunflower in one of the courtyard gardens.

Assisted living services provide housing, hospitality services and personal care services for adults who can live independently and make decisions on their own behalf but require a supportive environment and some assistance with daily living due to physical and functional health challenges. Residents of Assisted Living residences are often active and vital: one recent example is a 90-plus senior at Park Place's Courtyard Terrace who made the news after she chased down a would-be purse-napper at the Metrotown Mall.

Please note that many Retirement Residences also offer support services that mirror those of assisted living, so depending on your needs or the needs of a loved one, either option may be a good choice.

Assisted living services are mandated by provincial legislation and include:

  • a private suite with a lockable door, usually with basic cooking facilities;
  • personal care services (may include assistance with tasks like bathing, grooming, dressing and mobility or tasks delegated by a health care professional);
  • at least two nutritious meals per day, one of which is the main meal;
  • access to basic activity programming such as social activities, entertainment, games, music and crafts;
  • weekly housekeeping;
  • laundering of towels and linen;
  • access to laundry equipment for personal laundry;
  • heating or cooling as necessary to maintain the safety and basic comfort level of the residence; and
  • a 24-hour emergency response system.

Assisted living services are suitable for a senior who requires personal care and hospitality services but who is still able to make decisions on his or her own behalf or who has a spouse who will live in the same suite and make those decisions. Seniors with moderate to advanced dementia are not suitable for assisted living, as most assisted living residences are not secured and allow residents to come and go at will.

Park Place offers assisted living at Courtyard Terrace in Burnaby; at Shannon Falls in Squamish; at Mountain Lake Seniors Community in Nelson; at The Wellington and at Meadow Ridge Seniors Community in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Park Place also offers supportive living to seniors and to younger adults at two locations in Edmonton: Villa Marguerite and Sprucewood Place. (In Alberta, assisted living is usually called supportive living or designated supportive living.) Click on the above links for more information about each Park Place assisted/supportive living residence or for contact information to arrange a tour.

Both subsidized and private pay suites are available. Park Place has subsidized Assisted Living suites available at Courtyard Terrace through Fraser Health; at Shannon Falls through Vancouver Coastal Health; at Mountain Lake through Interior Health; and at The Wellington through Alberta Health. Application for a subsidized suite must be made through the appropriate health authority with the support of the potential resident's doctor. There can be a waiting list and applicants must complete an assessment to qualify for a subsidized suite.

If the suite is subsidized, the maximum cost for a B.C. senior will be 70% of after-tax income. In Alberta, new rates effective as of September 2013 established the daily user-pay charge for designated supportive living at $58.70.
